Every wedding I’ve had the privilege of filming has been full of meaning, surprises, joy and laughter. Brian and Maisie’s wedding was an experience I will never forget. To begin with, the fact that I would be filming the wedding was actually a surprise gift to the bride. Thus we entered the scene of this enchanted wedding as evidence of this beautiful couple’s spirit of generosity and love toward everyone around them.

A note on Brian and Maisie themselves: Upon meeting Brian we asked him how he and Maisie met. As he began to tell the story of how he fell in love with Maisie, it was as though we were old friends settling down for the whole story, no summaries, short cuts, or hurry to run off and get ready. When we met Maisie, we felt the same sense of complete attention and devotion to the people she loves. These two are a perfect match for their desire to fully love and appreciate the people around them.

Quite literally, this was the most fun wedding we have ever been to. It’s always wonderful to see a couple personalize the traditions of their wedding. Brian and Maisie planned a wedding that was as much an expression of themselves and their love for each other, as it was a gift to their loved ones. Every guest’s smile was contagious, and their joy grew with each new surprise. Not even a thunderstorm could take away the spirit of gratitude, celebration, and playfulness that infused every single moment of this wedding.

Radio interview about super 8 weddings

A while back I was interviewed by Scott Sheppard of Inside Analog Photo Radio about the Super 8 format for weddings. In addition to being a really cool guy,  Scott knows his stuff when it comes to photography and film. We spoke for about 45 min. over the phone about cinematography and super 8 film-making,  needless to say I had a lot of fun nerding out over film.

HFD App + iPhone = Super 8 joy

iPhone users rejoice - we have Super 8 convergence!

There's a fab little iPhone App available called the Hyper Focus Calculator that will calculate the acceptable focus distance for any aperture and focal length for a huge variety of cameras and formats.

The good news is that the HFD Calculator has just been updated to include 8mm, Super 8mm and 16mm formats and is damn useful in the field to make sure that you're not going to be shooting soft. Simply dial in the aperture and focal length from your camera - the distance beyond which all objects can be brought into an "acceptable" focus is then displayed in feet, inches or that newfangled metric system. Genius!

The beauty of film

 Ever since I can remember I have been fascinated by the warmth and beauty of celluloid film. There is just something about super 8 film that does more than just document an event. It has the ability to capture not just what is seen, but what is felt. There is a beautiful and unique love story within every wedding, and that is what I seek to capture in my films.
